Prevention Tips

The best Underwater Hypoxic Blackout (UHB) prevention is education. Avoid hyperventilating, always swim with a buddy, and be aware of the risks during breath-holding activities.

Take a Breath! Avoid prolonged breath-holding and breathe normally, which includes taking regular breaks, breathing deeply, and taking breaths at a steady pace.

Never hyperventilate, the practice of breathing in and out quickly to deplete your CO2 levels, as it dramatically increases the risk of UHB.

Always make sure you have a buddy when swimming. While underwater breath-holding is never encouraged, if you do practice it, keep your buddy nearby to tap on your shoulder so you can signal that you’re okay. Their focus should be on you, and they shouldn’t breath-hold while you are.

Don’t rely on lifeguards. UHB is undetectable above the surface and has caused even experienced athletes to die while under the watch of a lifeguard.

Unfortunately, we live in a world that has practiced underwater breath-holding and hyperventilating for decades. Spread the word to friends and family so they understand the risks and what to avoid.

Remember that lifeguards don’t typically have training to monitor breath-holding, and that everyone from parents to coaches regularly encourage breath-holding drills. It’s our mission to change that culture.
